ICON SPORT: HARD TIMES Event Pics Saturday - August 2, 2008
ICON Sport’s “HARD TIMES” event on August 2, 2008 was a fantastic night of fights. The majority of the fights were very entertaining and exceeded everyone’s expectations. It’s not always easy to predict or plan how an event will turn out because of the unpredictability of MMA. One can plan and match up opponents with all the best intentions for trying to produce an exciting list of fights, but it doesn’t always work out the way you’d hope. But this night of fights definitely turned out to be as fun to watch as could possibly be hoped for. It was one good fight after another. The official results of the fights were as follows: ~Alan Lima defeats Mark Tajon (armbar in Round 2) ~Brad Tavares defeats Devin Kauwe (ref stoppage in Round 1) ~Ian Dela Cuesta vs Keola Silva (no contest due to groin kick by Keola Silva in Round 1) ~Kyle Miyahana defeats Brewski Lewis (unanimous decision) ~Maui Wolfgram defeats Richard Desforge (rear naked choke in Round 1) ~Ed Newalu defeats Ricky Wallace (unanimous decision) ~Eddie Rincon defeats Dean Lista (unanimous decision) ~Sidney Silva defeats Hideto Kondo (armbar in Round 1) ~Mario Miranda defeats Jose Diaz (ref stoppage in Round 1) ~Phil Baroni defeats Ron Verdadero (ref stoppage in Round 1) ~Bao Quach defeats Mark Oshira (unanimous decision – ICON Sport’s North American Title) ~Kala Kolohe Hose defeats Rolando Dominique (ref stoppage in Round 2) Here are pics from the event… Hope you enjoy… Nolan Hong and Chelsie Castillo of the ICON and RAZE families enjoy the event… Nolan and his dog Hitch were the unfortunate victims of an attack by two unleashed and unattended dogs… We’re all glad that they’re both alright. Rolando Dominique kicking to the body of Kala Kolohe Hose Rolando Dominique scored heavy and early against Kala Kolohe Hose and looked like he had Kala in some trouble. Rolando Dominique vs Kala Kolohe Hose Rolando Dominique vs Kala Kolohe Hose Rolando Dominique vs Kala Kolohe Hose Kala Kolohe Hose turns the tide on Rolando Dominique. Kala weathers the storm and goes on the offensive Kala Kolohe Hose vs Rolando Dominique Rolando Dominique tries to salvage the fight by going after an armbar Kala Kolohe Hose vs Rolando Dominique Kala Kolohe Hose vs Rolando Dominique Kala Kolohe Hose vs Rolando Dominique Kala Kolohe Hose vs Rolando Dominique Kala wins the fight… An exhausted and beaten Rolando Dominique gets checked moments after the end. Kala gets his hand raised in victory after a tough fight Phil Baroni steps in the ring to challenge Kala to a rematch Mark Oshiro vs Bao Quach This was probably the fight of the night. These guys both went to WAR!!! Mark Oshiro swings high against Bao Quach. Mark Oshiro kicks to the body and Bao Quach catches. Mark Oshiro shows off his flexibility. And who would’ve thought we would’ve seen Oshiro breaking out the rubber guard. Bao Quach controlled the position for much of the fight And rained down some heavy knees to the body of Mark Oshiro. Bao Quach works hard to try and get the armbar. You can see the resolve and effort on both their faces. Bao gives it everything he’s got, while Oshiro grimaces in pain but refuses to tap. Mark Oshiro works his way out of a kneebar attempt. In the end, Bao Quach walked away with the belt and a hard fought win. Baroni always makes a grand entrance. T.Jay announces the Baroni / Verdadero fight. Baroni goes after Ron Verdadero. Ron Verdadero and Phil Baroni trade. Baroni catches Verdadero. Baroni catches Verdadero. Yuji Shimada stops the fight. Mario Miranda kicks at Jose Diaz. Mario Miranda was all over Jose Diaz from the get go. Seconds before the end of the fight. Mario Miranda gets the “W”. Sidney Silva meets Hideto Kondo in the middle of the ring. Sidney Silva unleashed a barrage of kicks. Some low… Some high… Many landed… Relentless attack. Another low kick lands. And now playing in Sidney’s world. Sidney goes after an arm. And gets it. Sidney celebrates in the back with Wanderlei Silva while a defeated Kondo digests the loss and wonders if it might’ve been a bad idea to make Sidney cut the 2 lbs again. Wanderlei Silva took the mic to tell the Hawaii fans how much he respects Sidney as a person and a fighter. That’s definitely something coming from the likes of a legend like Wanderlei. Dean Lista throws a low kick at Eddie Rincon. Eddie Rincon counters with a hard right when Lista kicks. Dean Lista vs Eddie Rincon. Dean Lista loses a tough decision to Eddie Rincon. Ed Newalu and Ricky Wallace meet up in the middle of the ring in what would end up being one of several wars this evening. Ed Newalu shoots for a single while Ricky works to defend the takedown attempt. One of many punches thrown and landed. More trading. Ricky connects. Ed Newalu works for the takedown. Ed Newalu punishes Ricky Wallace while Ricky works his way back to the feet. The general theme of the fight. And after the war was waged, it was Ed Newalu’s hand raised in victory. Maui Wolfgram catches Richard Desforge with a rear naked choke. Allan Lima works for the armbar. And switches back to the triangle. And finally finishes with the armbar. Allan Lima gets the “W” after a tough fight against a tough Mark Tajon. TUF season 1 standout and current UFC middleweight contender, Chris Leben, took a break from his coaching duties to talk about his upcoming fight, living in Hawaii, and working with us at ICON Fitness. ICON Fitness management personnel, Chelsie Castillo lands on the chin of her man, Nolan Hong. HMC owner and ICON Sport head judge, Kevin Yoshida, looks on. Hard working ref Chris West and ICON Sport president T.Jay Thompson. If you mess with the “Bull” you get the horns. Don’t mess with Kitana. Steven the “Soul Samurai” Saito. Chris Leben and Xmas. From L to R, retarded fanboy, Hayato “MACH” Sakurai, Rich Chou, and the Wizard Matt Hume. And we caught Bao Quach in the parking lot who wanted to get a pic taken with a couple pretty girls before his bruises swelled up and he got even uglier… lol… Just messing with you Bao… Congrats on being a part of one of the more amazing fights we’ve seen in Hawaii lately, and for coming away with the “W” and the belt!!!
